St Armands, also referred to as Lido Key, is where the locals head to the beach (Lido Beach). Less heavily partied than Siesta Key, St Armands' beach is smaller but their public beach access area does have a "public" pool for which you can buy a pass on a daily basis. There is also a place to get snacky snacks while you are on the sand.
Smaller than the southern sister island of Siesta Key, Lido Key also plays host to a large number of nesting shorebirds.
The character of St Armands also differs greatly from Siesta Key. It has a more distinguished profile and higher end shops and restaurants. There continue to be homes on this particular island that have been in the same family for 4 generations. It is also home to architecturally designed and built homes (more so than Siesta Key), and in particular there are still homes remaining from the inception of the Sarasota School of Architecture that began in the 1930s but took full flight by the 1950s, and was the model for what we today call a mid-century modern home (the Sarasota School of Architecture is taught as a distinct school in architectural studies).
Morningside Drive is a MUST for anyone who truly appreciates architecture; not only are there a couple of original Sarasota School houses still there, but also more recent moderns by Guy Peterson and Michael Haflants.
