Sarasota

When I first moved to Florida in 2007, I was not sure where to live. I looked from Punta Gorda to Palmetto, settling (most happily) in Sarasota. Why did I choose Sarasota?

I had been living in Europe for 18 years, and as I walked through downtown Sarasota, I heard several different languages, noticed that Sarasota represents many different cultures and ethnicities in its dining choices. Having been to multiple world capitals over the years, Sarasota very quietly exuded that same general vibe, but was still small and more navigable than Washington or Paris or London. 

With my 9 year old in tow, Sarasota also offered me the best school options for him. 

It is still my favorite Florida city. Whether wanting to get involved in volunteering, or to go snorkeling just off the shore or cycling along the Legacy Trail, Sarasota provides it all. Often touted as the "culture coast" of Florida, Sarasota does offer its visitors and residents a greater cultural experience.

You also have the new Mote Marine Aquarium, ideally situated out by UTC Mall and I-75, but the research facility and original aquarium is still out on City Island, just off of St Armands. There's the Legacy Trail Bike Path that runs from downtown Sarasota all the way to the island of Venice. There are numerous public and member only golf courses and pickleball and tennis courts. There are plenty of marinas and dry docking for boats, and boat rental clubs waiting here. There's the amazing Saturday morning Farmer's Market, as well as the one at Phillippi Creek Park on Wednesdays. 

The year round population of Sarasota is only around 60,000 people, but that number doubles from January thru May when "season" begins. It's a good idea to be prepared (when you live) to shift your schedules to avoid the traffic during season.
